Two-party system

IN the years to come this election may well be remembered as Malaysia’s rite of passage to democracy with a maturing electorate. Though our hearts go out to many deserving candidates who were vanquished at the polls, there is much to celebrate in the manner the electoral exercise was completed.

Democratic culture: The gracefulness with which BN leaders conceded defeat and the magnanimity with which the victors accepted their triumph behoves well for an emerging democratic culture.

Here may be the beginnings of a wide spectrum two-party system. MPs in the Dewan Rakyat can be more assertiveness .

Local authorities: In the four new Opposition states, local authorities will undergo changes. There may even be a move to revive local authority elections.
