Presently spearheading the Transport Ministry, Kong who is also the Honorary Secretary-General of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) began his illustrious political career in 1999 as Member of Parliament for the Lumut constituency.
In 2004, Kong took office as Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. During this tenure, Malaysia’s name flourished with the Angkasawan (Astronaut) programme. The programme successfully resulted in Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor as the first Malaysian in space on 10 October 2007. Kong then became Deputy Finance Minister of Malaysia in 2008.
Within the following year, Kong was promoted to his inaugural ministerial portfolio with the Housing and Local Government Ministry between 2009 and 2010. That period carved a watershed for green development initiatives in Malaysia with the introduction of the Green Building Index.
